DITS (Dumber in the Summer) Syndrome

Dear students,

As your summer goes into full swing, it’s important that you recognize the symptoms of DITS Syndrome and can seek appropriate treatment immediately. DITS, also known as Dumber in the Summer, can happen to most anyone.  Causes of the disorder include:

  • inadequate exposure to books
  • complete avoidance of math problems
  • watching too much television
  • lack of curiosity about the natural world

The side effects of DITS are devastating.  If DITS goes untreated, you will forget most things you learned in school the year before, making the next grade nearly impossible.

The good news about DITS is that it is completely avoidable.  Be sure to read everyday (reading this blog counts), visit math-related websites like Math Playground to play some great refresher games, limit your time in front of the television, and be sure to get outside and become “one with nature”–maybe do some research about animals or bugs that live in your yard.

It is my hope that none of my students are affected with DITS this summer, but if you feel symptoms that you can’t control, you know where to find me! Hope you’re having a great summer!  I miss you all!

Smiles,
Mrs. B 🙂
