I suppose there are always those who will be offended, Emily, but in my case I have a good rapport with my students and their families. They understand that this was written with tongue-in-cheek; it's a funny way to say something serious.

I used to dress up as a doctor on the last day of school. The kids would ask why I was dressed like that, but I wouldn't tell them until the end of the day. That's when I'd tell them about the symptoms of DITS and hand out their "vaccine" (aka summer homework packet). They would laugh and groan at the same time! :)

Very creative term- DITS. We typically use Summer Brain Drain or Summer learning loss etc while talking to parents about our online summer math camp at http:www.clickandclimb.com. I wonder if parents will get offended if we use DITS instead. It's more of a straight shooter term.

Completely agree with- "The good news about DITS is that it is completely avoidable." The earlier the parents and students learn the importance of avoiding DITS, the better it is and they will see the benefits in fall when their kids go to the next grade level.
